ONE AND A HUNDRED GUERNICAS
         by Piero Carbone

Traduzione inglese di Piero Lo Jacono

It seems far the trigger which was the main inspiration for the most famous work by Picasso eighty years ago: the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica; and still today too many bombings, too many attacks, too many wars, too much blood in the modern age are present inspirations to conceive not one but hundreds new Guernicas.

Sociologically and aesthetically, Filippo Grillo says that: the individual, even as an artist, is the expression of the society that he represents. Yet, soon after he claims, always as an artist, freedom and independence from his artistic action, in spite of coincidences and similarities. The choice of the technique of collage or papier collé, for example, to represent "his" Guernica or the red that explodes in the canvas: autonomous choices, while recording assonances, albeit dissonant. The original Picasso is neither a papier collé nor you can see the red, although ...

During the lovely, preparatory, free talk I had with him and Nicolò D'Alessandro, Filippo Grillo says he had identified, in Picasso's Guernica, some "parts" which "seem the pictorial elaboration of a collage", as if Picasso had written on drawn lines, but "the assumption is that it could have used some paper collage fragments in his studies and then he could have brought them back into painting" with a rough ideographic writing. Nicolò D'Alessandro adds: "Picasso took the structure of writing making it something else".

And what about the red color that explodes in several parts in Grillo’s collage? The work of Picasso stretches almost monochromatically, and then only, among grays and blacks.
For a Sicilian artist it is a natural continuum the passage from the palette of nature and atavistic society, in which he finds himself, to the red-ringing, whether it is popular carts or elaborated painting: Etna, domes, blood, oranges, sunsets, wine,...
Grillo declares: "From the beginning I had planned to blow up these reds and then I did that."Eloquent reds of so many echoes, of so much civil sensitivity, incubated, we could say, in some lines of his: "Everything shouts on this island. There is still the blood splattered on the walls. And there is also the putrid blood of indifference. "

In this way, he, unconsciously, made re-emerge and made visible the red drop that Picasso, in his various drafts, had thought to place in many parts, even on the bull's eye, and eventually, it is said, it has been sealed in the box in which it was temporarily kept, waiting for the right location.
There would be perhaps not only aesthetic reasons but also political opportunities in Picasso to understand his difficulty to witness openly with the blood-red which referred to political red as opposed to the political red-black of Franco’s fascism which supported the black holocaust of Guernica caused by Nazism.

Or simply, in Picasso, the memory of a passionate Sicilian encountering with the dancer known in Naples tried to emerge through that red condensed into a drop.
In that drop -and why not, just like lava: a metonymy of Sicily, the part for the whole?-  turned brown over time, he would have stumbled and cast another clear and visible memory, if it is true, as Michele Cutaia says, that the airy head of the horse, a central figure in the Picasso's painting, would explicitly recall the famous triumph of Death in Palermo with long strides between the red flames of Hell, ridden by the skeletal Death veiled in black.

Filippo Grillo has worked on his idea for months, devoid of these brainstorms, even if he says, from a certain point on, he felt it like an obsession from which to get free, completing the execution, "to see what it was born, and how", and he spreads his arms with some satisfaction by measuring the length and the height of the work completed: two meters for eighty centimeters, smaller than the original of which it did not want to be a "copy" but “an original remake”.

Freed from this obsessive work, Filippo Grillo, among the rich range of his many artistic and cultural interests, he had time and inspiration to compose more than seventy original collages such as the series of banknotes, that of the small shrouds, that of the urban landscapes, that of  the interlocking geometric figures. But a common thread is to be gathered, beyond the clear references and similarities, in all of these voracious and all-embracing assemblages: the aspiration to represent ideas in a general surreal form, and in the form of harping  and combined colors, seems to allude painting without meaning to be. Since the collage is not intended by Grillo as a derogation from painting but a complete and eloquent language with its own dignity and autonomy.

Moreover, the scholar and collector of traditions and folk songs, that is Filippo Grillo, plays and sings those traditions and those melodies with love because he can act and sing very well, at the same way he chooses, from time to time, the language with which he likes to express himself, in a perennial modernity: in short, he makes collages not because he can’t paint or make sculpture but for the simple reason that he could draw, paint and sculpt as he proved that he is able to do in his stratified, previous, always current, existences.
